It's handy to be able to take copies of things which you can annex to statements, e.g. a bank account statement or some other document... but it's not make or break to have a portable scanner. In many cases people will allow you to take the original to prepare a copy, and return at a later date to return the original to them, and at the same time, have them sign their statement and any attachments.

Hi, I don't think you can get a true portable printer that also photcopies?
I agree that a scanner is not essential but I have a portable scanner  for the times - (usually at a claimant's house) where it is quicker to scan any required document  than mess around with postage. Works well. As a bonus I  can also  scan the boxes of family photos that I have wanted to put on a disk for ages.

I did some training with a guy who carried around  a full size multi printer in his car boot so he could photocopy on the job. Worked for him but no way I am going to lug one around.

cheers

I bought myself a handheld scanner earlier this year for my university studies, and it's paid off remarkably well. I can't imagine needing to get a photocopier now. Just plug my scanner into the laptop, and print it out.

I'm looking at the Canon Pixma IP100 for portability.
