Hi all,

New to the forum here and currently undertaking the cert III.  Would be interested to hear the type of industry and/or role(s) the cert III has lead you to?

Obviously it's not all spying and cheating spouses  ;), so would love to hear of the different directions the qualification has taken everyone!

Evening Chogzs,

Certificate III in Investigative Services; lead to Certificate IV in Government (Investigations), which showed enough competence to become employed as a inspector/investigator within the WA health industry.

So indeed, not all about cheating spouses.

Regards,

Josh

I went for the Self Employed option.

The majority of my work is made up as follows; 70% locating, 20% of miscellaneous work (phone calling, background checks, etc.) and finally only 10% surveillance (the ratio was higher than that in previous years, however, now winding down in that area).

I became a Case Manager for both factual and surveillance.. managing contractors and quality controlling their work, assigning jobs, etc. It gave me a good insight to the entire industry.

I actually came at it arse-about - I initially began working as a compliance investigator with the federal government, studied a Cert IV in Government (Investigation), moved into a fraud investigators role (which I remain in today), did a cert III in investigative services (mostly RPL'ed from the Cert IV), and now have my own business on the side from work.. mainly factual and process serving work, not much surveillance as it's not all that compatible with full time day work..

Was a Professional Jockey in the past 77 till 83, gave up riding went broke had my car repo and back in then early 80's had the CES then where you walked in and looked on the jobs board...I seen advertised an Insurance Investigator with car $187.50 a week plus over time...So I applied, caught a tram to the interview got the job and drove home in a 1982 Holden Panel Van with a shell card...Was trained on the job and loved it, back then you didn't have too have a license too operate as a PI....Back then we used a super 8 movie camera and the company had an account with Agfa where we would drop off our films on subjects...My how things are changed...Use to do obs in the back of the Panel Van had a mattress and bean bag and of course curtains in the windows... Then returned to race riding in 88 till 93 and got back into surveillance start after that and spent 3 yrs as a p/t assistant steward working various race meeting around Victoria...
All in all this is the gig and I wouldn't swap the life for any... :)
Met a lot of interesting people along the way as I rubbed shoulders with the rich and famous through racing and raced against the best...Loyalty well its hard to find that anywhere in business and surely not in racing...Life is what you make it....

As I thought and hoped, it seems like the qualification can open doors to a variety of different ways to make a living.  Personally I'm interested in the Government side of things, so it was great to hear that it's an achievable goal.

I look forward to hearing more from you all through the forum  and thank you for your replies!  ;D

I'm in a way doing it arse about as well, I currently work as an Senior Investigator for a debt purchase agency however obtaining Cert III and IV as I have a few things on the side which will require the license, really enjoy the skip tracing, preparing evidence for court, getting a good end result one thing I am looking forward to is the surveillance side of things (most would disagree here) but I really don't mind the small amount I have done in some fraud cases.

What a great thread, I started working as a form analyst for a bookmaker then after quite a bit of travelling, moved in to casinio surveillance and worked for their investigations department.  I've started my Cert III now in order to get some "official" qualifications and would eventually like to get a Cert IV and work in government investgations.
