Evening All,

After considerable effort and an intense amount of frustration over the past 6 months, i have finally had LPG fitted to my car.

I had a 55 litre tank in my spare wheel well and filled up for $33 (.64c/L)instead of the usual $90-100 (1.70/L Premium)

So far so good. that was yesterday morning (monday)

Today, 304 kilometers later...empty,
I have a 3.8L V6 and i kind of expected more mileage than that.

My question to you all, is, what sort of milage are you getting from your LPG? engine capacity v tank size.

Regards
Porter

Just a quick calculation for you mate.

LPG @ $0.64c per litre (worked out on a average V6 burning 18l's of lpg per 100km's)
100km = $10.85
1 km = $0.10

Fuel @ $1.70 per litre (worked out on a average V6 burning 9.5l's of fuel per 100km's)
100km = $16.15
1 km = $0.16

So if you do an average of 30,000km's per year it would work out to be:
LPG = $3255.00
FUEL = $4845.00

That is a saving of $1590.00 per year, so if it cost you $4000 for your conversion, it would take you 2.5 years before you would "pay off" the cost of the conversion in savings on fuel!

I wish I could get LPG at $0.64 p/l. Up here it is about $0.75/$0.80 p/l.

Well, looks like i am better off,
Last year was a little over 70000km,
by your calculations, i should pay it off in 12 odd months!!

But that still leaves me with the question,

Is 304km bad for a 55 litre tank of LPG?

Yes, the LPG rebate is still valid.

Porter, your figures sound about right to me.

I owned & operated an LPG Taxi for a couple of years (EB Falcon) and though I dont remember the tank size, we used to average about 250 - 300km on a tank of LPG.

Driving hard uses LPG quicker than fuel so accelerate slowly where possible. You might also want to have your car tuned for the LPG as it runs slightly thinner than petrol. Although with modern EMS that may nor be necessary.

Icall,

On premium i get 580-620kms/tank pending on demograghic,
Open road its in the vicinity of 715km per tank.

Although given the tank difference i expected a little better than the 304km's, i was hoping for nore like 400-480km.

i believe i will do just that,
Looks like tuning for gas is something i will look into.

Appreciate it,

Regards
Porter.

Porter,
You said you have a 3.8 l V6 so i presume you have a commodore??? I am an ex Holden Service Advisor / Technician and the figures you state seem to be a little  on the rich side. If as previously mentioned you take it to a LPG specialist and get it tuned then you should note  a reasonable increase. I simply noticed no one had directly answered your question yet. BTW dont forget to run on petrol every so often, commodore injectors dont like being left idle and before you know it you will have a piggy misfiring v6. Which is never cool. Hope i helped pm if you need anything else

There are two types of LPG installs. One of them uses old technology and cost very little after the rebate, in the low hudreds I think. This tech. gives about 60% of the range of an equivalent amount of petrol. The other model uses new tech and apparently gives similar performance to petrol and about 90% of the range of an equivalent amount of petrol. This costs as much as $2000 after the rebate.

In the weekend press in Melbourne there was an article about a new italian lpg kit that actaully gives greater performance than petrol and uses the same amount of gas as petrol. No prices given on this one.

I stand to be corrected on the above figures - I tend to believe what I read sometimes to my disadvantage....lol.

Eyespy,
i appreciate your answer, sorry i missed it.
No not a commodore but the theory is sound and i am having it looked at early august to see what can be done.
Fuel is just getting stupid.

Eric,
i had a direct injection system put im, a nightmare 6 months later its almost sorted. not exactly sure precisely what model but boy what a difference in fuel cost, even if it is running badly.

Isnt petrol just crazy??? I just heard on the news, predictions it will go to 8$ a litre within a decade (CSIRO). I have a commodore, definatly looking at something smaller. It has served me well, but have no idea what i am going to be going to next.... :roll:

wasnt that one of the dumbest announcments on earth.
what a twit, that just causes panick in an unstable society.
i would have thought better of the CSIRO
when you warn someone you give them time to mentally prepare.
thay have effectively warned the world so now the stock market thats driving the price up now simply thinks we are preparing mentally for it so why not go ahead and push up the prices.

CSIRO should have been throwing their weight into assisting in reducing the price not causing panick

some people need to start being held accountable for their actions and their opinions.

Sorry, got on my high horse!!

I have had LPG on my vehicles over the last 10 or so years and have been more than happy with the running of the vehicles from Nissan to Mitsubishi's and ofcourse the dollars saved have been excellent of course.

In saying the above, I have never had a problem with any of my vehicles on LPG and highly recommend it for anyone in this industry.
